I Can't Breathe

Claustrophobic George Floyd's words "I can't breathe and don't kill me" before his death morphed into slogans of those who are up in almost 40 states and 75 cities of United states of America against racism ,injustice and fascism.

The death of Floyd 46 has wobbled and challenged the system of governance in USA.Law enforcement bodies imposed curfew to handle law and order situation amid a deadly pandemic Corona.Police in most of the states has to use rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse protests.Experts and analyts substantiated the unrest more critical and horrendous than the crisis witnessed in Martin Luther King's era (1955-1968).

Progressives ,humanitarians and even White people of America joined agitations against structural violence, injustice and inequality across the country.Protests are also being witnessed in Canada against racial discrimination and crippled policing of USA.The american police brutality, festering the wound isnot new either.Buildings nearby White House have been vandalised and alighted.

It is pertinent to question why a single incident incited an outrage in public that culminated in massive protests in self-proclaimed best democracy of the world?

The white enslaved black people in early settlement in North America if history is unveiled.Civil rights movement spearheaded the legacy of blacks' struggle to eradicate discrimination and hate.Though American civil war (1861-1865) ended slavery under the paramountancy of Abraham Lincoln yet African Americans in south and nearby states were marginalised in all walks of life e.g schools, hospitals ,hotels etc. Some recreational areas even posted "Negros and Dogs not allowed ".Prejudice and Biases deprived black people of getting decent jobs ,rights of citizens including voting.

Activism of Septima Clark from South Carolina and Ella Baker from North Carolina improved conditions in South.Rosa Park incident served as an impetus to boycott white owned businesses ended up in her arrest because she hadnot allowed a white man to sit on her pessenger seat in a bus saying she already sat and she was not going to stand at back following the suit.

President Franklin D Roosevelt,Truman ,Kennedy and Johnson strived hard to end the split between black and white. The row between the two continued till date during the reigns of Democrats and Republicans.

Poverty rates and unemployment among African Americans remain twice as high as those of whites.Longetivity of Blacks is comparitvely less due to their limited access to health care.

Another reason is the populism of Mr President Donald Trump, his incompetence, belligerence, mismanagement and racist policies of governance in contemporary era.The police in one of the viral videos on web is seen arresting a black american citizen who later turned out to be an FBI agent. This blatantly exposed the bigots present in the system under the garb of white supremacy. The use of force and state apparatus against citizens is fiasco of democratic values ,political will and state policies.

Though the derogatory and contemptous attitude towards Black Americans has put Mr Trump's politics into jeopardy yet it leads to another question.

Is this only happening in USA where people cant breathe ?

The racial discrimination ,persecution, ethnic disparities and sectarian violence has been witnessed in every corner of the world. The muslims under populist regime of Modi in India cannot be condoned where they are divested of their fundamental rights  because of the faith they believe in and religion they belong to.The innocent people of Kashmir have been choked to death since 1948 and the situation further exacerbated after abrogation of Article 370 and 35-A.The Palestinians have been brutally crushed and alienated since decades. The people of Yemen ,Syria,Iraq and Afghanistan cannot breathe due to power games on behalf of some and their vested interests.

We need to stand for everyone who suffers and cannot breathe due to discrimination and prejudice based on color ,caste, sect and creed ,be that any corner of the globe.
